What are Satsuma Citrus Fruits? Find Out More as I Taste Test One Live

On Facebook, I heard about something called that Satsuma orange.

I'm like, what the heck is it?

And I'm thinking, is it called this because it looks like a sumo wrestler?

Is that why they call it that?

Nope. It's distinguished by this little knot on top.

I did a little research. It's actually a mandarin. It's a combination of a certain couple of mandarins and orange.

What is a mandarin? It's one of the biggest, and it was developed in Japan.

The origin of Satsuma Citrus Fruits

They created it in about the 1970s, and now it's grown in California and in Australia, and it has 163 percent of your daily vitamin C.

That's almost one and a half times the amount of vitamin C that's required in two days and has 10 percent of potassium.

What I was told is it's super delicious. It grows from January to April, so when they're out, Facebook says you have to go try them.

Where Dr. Deb Tastes a Satsuma Citrus Fruit LIVE

All right, so this is live. Never done this before.

Oh my gosh, that's a little odd. It's a little odd pulling that (nub) off, but it's known for super easy peel.

That's super easy to peel. It's the size of almost a grapefruit. I do like that it doesn't have seeds, and I do like mandarins, and I love clementines. So I'm thinking, hmm, is this going to taste more like an orange or clementine? I was told it segments very well, and this is segmenting very well.

All right, here we go. That's a honkin honkin big piece.

Sorry, people.

What Do Satsuma Citrus Fruits Taste Like?

It's actually delicious, but there's some sourness to it. It is good. This face doesn't mean it's not good. It just means I'm sensitive. The taste is sour.

This is unlike an orange.

It's unlike a clementine.

It's unlike a mandarin, but there are elements of all of those in here.

So I would say they're expensive. It can probably feed a family of four, but most likely you could save it for dessert for maybe two or three people and give it a try. Satsuma citrus, it's called.

The Satsuma Citrus Fruit gets a thumbs up from Dr. Deb.

Enjoy and let me know how you like it.

Changing the world one tasty bite at a time,

Dr. Deb
